At this time of the year coarse fish are very active in the water column or directly under the surface, where we can fish them with great success for both dry and wet flies in all sizes, but also for natural baitfish streamers or small nymphs. So, thanks to this gallery, let's move to the big river and see how successful and very entertaining summer hunts of these hefty and beautifully colored fish can be! Great place for fly fishing for large chub, asp or bream and other interesting coarse fish. Large rivers are often poorly accessible - so look for rugged and shallower areas with slower secondary currents and slow flowing pools! Fish love such places.

Abundant shore vegetation is full of life! The trees and bushes lining the river are full of insects in all sorts of shapes and sizes, as shown in this picture! When I can fish with large dry flies imitating terrestrials, I'm so excited!

My favorite patterns is my AR Black & Peacock Foam Beetle! It seems to me that Czech fly fishermen are quite distrustful of this kind of dry flies and they prefer a traditional way. But why not make a "New Zealand conditions" in the Czech Republic? ;-)

The big Goddard's caddis on 8 size hook end in the big chub mouth like nothing! I like to remember this day. I waded the river to a more distant and inaccessible shore and under the branches I caught a beautiful chub on the big dry flies!

Proof that AR Black & Peacock Foam Beetle works great! Even if the chub are quite easy to fish on big dry flies, if you stay at some place longer time, be sure to change the flies! Chub are gullible, but not stupid - all the more so with larger specimens!

Another beautiful and perfect summer chub that couldn't resist the big Goddard Sedge! I love this dry fly, because it is practically universal and all year round usable pattern! Fish accept this fly with great confidence in times when caddis don't occur.

Beautiful specimen of high chub exceeding 50 cm. This nice fish was caught on a larger dark wet fly using a hover fly line and 5wt fly rod. This combination is my favorite for chub and asp fly fishing on large rivers.

Sometimes we can catch a really nice Ide. It is a fish quite similar to the asp, but with some features it comes close to the chub. Anyway, it's another wonderful fish species that we can catch with fly gear on non-trout water!

The really big mouth is ready to devour a truly diverse food. Big terrestrial or aquatic insects, larvae, pupae, small fish, petty amphibians or even sweet fruits of fruit trees... No problem for the big chub as you can see on the picture!

AR Pink Tag Green Peacock Jig. Something between a nymph and a wet fly! However, it is an excellent fly pattern, which I like to use all year long when fishing coarse fish on non-trout waters!

Bigger fish are usually more tired after a fight than smaller fish. Therefore, hold them in the stream until you feel their strength and muscle activity return to your body! It's a beautiful feeling when a fish go back, smarter than before.

Even smaller chub eat streamers. This fish could not resist my AR Skinny Fry Streamer, a simple and very effective thin streamer tied from pearly tinsel and natural colored white-brown bucktail. All on the traditional streamer hook with a long shank.

Big golden chub with typical red fins and dark tail. This fish is photographed next to the rod in shallow water to avoid injury if it decides to get out of the "danger". This is certainly the right method when you want to make a picture of your catch!

Slightly cloudy water in and nice stream near a bushy shore. Ideal contitions for wet style with dark patterns. Cast the flies into the shore and let them drift slowly in the water column. And don't worry that you wouldn't recognize the strikes! ;-)

The perfect chub! I caught him under overhanging branches on a thin streamer. A large dark shadow came out from under the dark bush after the fly hit the surface and then grabbed it. Under overhanging branches, the appearance of large chub is almost 100%!
